White Cane Center
The White Cane Center is financially supported and operated by the Sarnia Lambton CCB White Cane Club, under the direction of the Club Executive. The White Cane Center is the 'only' facility of its kind in the Canadian Council of the Blind throughout Canada.
A "storefront" operation, open five days a week, the Center is staffed by members and associate member volunteers. The White Cane Center provides a visible and physical presence of the CCB in the community. It serves in part as a drop-in center for members and non-members alike, and to the general public. The White Cane Center provides referral and information resources.
The Center carries a wide selection of "soft" aids and devices for sale (at cost), and display. There is also a display of "high tech" aids, for training and demonstration purposes. The White Cane Center serves as a coordinating body for distributing information on events, activities, or materials sponsored by the CCB, or CNIB. Other activities include:
- Volunteer members 'repairing' and distributing Talking Book Machines (TBMs),
- Sponsor and/or host various classes eg: tactile art, computer, ham radio, etc.
- A selection of large print books, magazines, descriptive videos, and "talking books" are available, for loan.
- Braille instruction, on request.
The White Cane Center continues to evolve and grow as it identifies and responds to issues and needs consistent with the mandate of the Canadian Council of the Blind, and the Sarnia Lambton CCB White Cane Club.
