History of Our Church
St. John-in-the-Wilderness Anglican church is in the Diocese of Huron on the shores of Lake Huron. The church was built in 1856 and was the second Anglican church to be established in the Sarnia area. At the time the church was built the land was cedar swamp. This is why the name was given to this pioneer church.
The property was established by Henry Jones who was given a 10,000 acre tract of land along Lake Huron shores in 1827. He brought a colony of sixty people from Paisley, Scotland in 1828 to build a back-settlers camp at the mouth of the Perche Creek, now the site of St. John-in-the-Wilderness church.
