Children's Restructuring

The Children’s Restructuring Committee continues to meet monthly to review the work of the subcommittees who are all working diligently to develop the various recommendations in the STARR: Brighter Outcomes report. Most subcommittees have been researching other models pertinent to their tasks.

1. Reinvestment Strategy/ Prevention Services

  • prevention/early intervention includes many formal programs, such as those offered through MCSS, education and health, as well as many informal supports that impact one a child’s life
  • preparing to circulate an early identification and prevention survey which will include definitions to assist respondents
  • presentations from a number of prevention initiatives are planned
  • a subgroup is presently reviewing successful models of prevention

2. Common Needs Assessment/ Database

  • surveys have been sent out requesting information on computer systems and software presently in use in our community
  • a request has also been made for assessment tools presently in use in our community
  • a draft referral form to be used on a pilot basis for three months has been forwarded to relevant agencies at which time feedback will be collected
  • Peter Pettingill, Project Manager for Standardized Client Information Systems (SCIS) Ontario Association of Children's Mental Health Centres, made a presentation sponsored by this sub-committee and the Residential Services and Alternatives Committee

3. Single Point of Access/Community Team

  • a vision statement, terms of reference and membership are complete
  • presentations from Linda Henry on the London project "The Co- Ordinated Access to Services Model" and on "Kent Access Services KIDS Team" by Anna Lockhart and Janice Acland
  • an access model to suit the needs of children and parents in Sarnia Lambton is in progress

4. Residential Services and Alternatives

  • terms of reference, essential principles and membership are complete
  • presentations by Dr. Alan Leishied reviewed Multi Systemic Therapy, by Dr. Philomena Newberry discussed a variety of community family treatment and Mr. John DeActis how Family Preservation is being implemented in London
  • a Trillium grant is being pursued to co-ordinate the implementation of the Wraparound process in Sarnia/Lambton

 

Updates From ...

  • Transition Committee
  • meets every two weeks and is chaired alternately by Pam Mundy, Community Girls Home and David McPhail, Sertoma Child and Youth Centre, chairs of their respective boards
  • the executive director of the amalgamated agency will be announced soon

an umbrella name for the amalgamated

  • organization is being sought while maintaining the historic identities of both agencies
  • Joint Restructuring Committee
  • continues to meet approximately every two months to keep both restructuring committees informed regarding each others work
  • common issues are noted and for some issues joint inquires or advocacy is made
  • a recent issue addressed jointly was the downsizing of the SRC team in Lambton and the possible loss of funding for residents in Sarnia Lambton

 

Other News

  • The chairperson of the Children’s Restructuring Committee recently lunched with the Minister of Community and Social Services, Janet Ecker, where they discussed the challenges of the restructuring process.
  • The chairpersons and several representatives of the restructuring committees met recently at an informal meeting at the Windsor Area Office with Deputy Minister Suzanne Herbert to discuss the progress of implementing Making Services Work for People.
