The Sarnia Paramedic Association was born out of a need for the Paramedics that work for the Sarnia Ambulance Service to promote themselves and the service we provide to the citizens of the City of Sarnia and surrounding area. In 1998 the government of Mike Harris turned over the management of the ambulance service to the "Upper Tier Municipalities" (the counties and regional councils) as of January 1, 2000. The UTMs, (Lambton County) never having to deal with ambulances other than calling 911 when they see an accident or having an ill family member now have to deal with problems like EMS budgets, staffing, providing ALS, and replacing aging fleets etc… It means that the County of Lambton will be paying the full bill for providing Ambulance services to its citizens. The county must decide who and how will be running the Ambulances. At present there are 5 separate ambulance services in Lambton County.
We, the paramedics now started talking to other services, our unions and Lambton county councils to make sure that the level of care that we provide today, stays at that level or improves.
Our Goal, for now it to educate John Q. Public as to what services are provided by the Sarnia Ambulance Service and the Paramedics of the Sarnia Paramedic Association.
Sarnia Ambulance provides two staffed 24 hour ambulances. Sarnia Ambulance has 1 full time station located in the center of the city and a satellite station in the north end of the city, which is staffed only 10 hours a day. This is handled all with 34 staff members (16 full-time , 1 permanent part time, and 17 casual (part time) staff members) Some of the members of the Sarnia Paramedic Association also work part time for other ambulance services in Lambton county. The ambulance services out side the City of Sarnia are staffed only during the day and at night the Paramedics are called out from their homes. The system, across the province has been let to fall behind the increasing call volumes, working at a bare minimum for the past several years.
Also we will be taking on special projects like the Victorian Order of Nurses annual fund raising drives by volunteering our services serving coffee etc. We also hold Bar-B-Ques to raise moneys for additional equipment for our ambulances.
