News Letters of the Sarnia Paramedic Association

December, 2000

Racing Against Drugs
Thanks to John Surins, Ray Gowan, Wendy Manzie and Gary Cassidy for their time and effort this year for the "Racing Against Drugs" November 7-9. Our "pit-stop" was well received by 1200 Grade 5 students. Marnie Garrett from the Lambton County Health Unit, one of the organizers, really liked the presentation that we put on, and hopes that we are able to come back next year.
We talked to the kids about peer pressure, and not being afraid to say NO to dares or risks that could see them get physically injured. We also talked about saying NO to drugs and alcohol, and talked about the repercussions of substance abuse. We strapped about 100 students onto a backboard as we talked. More volunteers would be GREAT for next year.
Lunch included.
Thanks to John Surins for leading everyone in song, and by the way, who did let the dogs out. :) Tom

Health and Senior Services

Discussion had taken place between Tom and Michelle Hunt concerning having a PCP and an ACP representative attend every Health and Senior Services Committee meeting. A letter was also sent to the committee outlining the proposal. Of course with the election and defeat of Michelle Hunt, along with the restructuring of the Ambulance Services under the Health and Emergency Services, that effort may be "on hold".

Meeting of the Sarnia Paramedic Association
Thursday, Dec 7th
20:00 hrs
Sarnia Base Hospital

Discussion and a vote will take place to change the name of the association to better reflect the "single-service" which will come into effect on Dec 15th. Tom proposes a name change to Sarnia/Lambton Paramedic Association. Membership of paramedics from all of Lambton EMS will also be tabled and voted on. Please try to attend. It's your association.

Remembrance Day
John Surins once again attended the Remembrance Day ceremonies and laid a wreath on behalf of the Sarnia Paramedic Association. The cost of the wreath is $60. A collection envelope has been placed in the Sarnia base to reimburse John for the wreath. Donations gratefully accepted or in person to John.

Computers in every Base, a chicken in every pot.
Our neighbour to the north, Huron County, which will also be a municipally operated service, is apparently planning to putting a computer with full internet access in every base. This is in an effort to aid communications and provide an opportunity for "in-house" education for Huron Paramedics. Do we need this too?
