IODE... Canada's Premier Women's Organization - IODE was founded in 1900. Over the years, the organization has met the changing needs of all Canadians coast to coast, with a particular focus on children. Members across the country raise over three million dollars every year and reinvest it in Canada's children, families and communities. Membership is open to Canadian women of all ages, backgrounds and interests. IODE Canada is a national women's charitable organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals through education support, community service and citizenship programs. There are over 5,000 members across Canada. Each year these women contribute 785,000+ volunteer hours to their communities. Approximately $896,000 is given to Education, over $2,000,000 to Services and $48,000 to Citizenship projects. The Honourable Norman Rogers Chapter began as a Junior Chapter on July 9, 1940. The Chapter was named after The Honourable Norman Rogers, a native of Amherst, Nova Scotia who was elected to the House of Commons in 1935, within this year he became Minister of Labour and later Minister of Defence, serving under Prime Minister MacKenzie King. The Honourable Norman Rogers was killed in a plane crash on June 10, 1940 while on Government business. Our Chapter Motto:"There is no defeat save from within The chapter has grown rapidly over the years, keeping up to date with the needs of the country and of the community in which they live. To-day the chapter has thirty-six members. They meet the second Tuesday of each month, with the exception of March, July and August, in the homes of chapter members. In June and December the meetings are followed by a luncheon. One of the strengths 'from within' has always been the fund raising projects. Over the years the members have proven to be very enterprising fund raisers. A variety of projects have been held: - a Cooking School, a Puppet Show; Luncheon Bridge Parties, a Fall Bazaar which ran for twenty-five years and a very successful Antique Show & Sale which ran for thirty-one years. While working on these projects the members developed a strong camaraderie which still exists today. The members of the Honourable Norman Rogers Chapter donate to National, Provincial and Municipal IODE Funds. The local funding is broken down into three major categories - Citizenship, Education and Services.
The 'strength from within' in our Chapter motto has indeed been the secret of success of the Honourable Norman Rogers Chapter over the years. The accomplishments of the members to help our fellow Canadians is all done with the ability to laugh at ourselves and the deep joy we experience in the camaraderie with our fellow members. The Hon. Norman Rogers Chapter IODE...is under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Chapter of Sarnia-Lambton IODE (formed in 1938). There are six Municipal Chapters, as follows:
Together these chapters contribute many thousands of dollars in scholarships and bursaries for students in our area. They support local hospitals, crisis centres and youth centres. IODE members have donated more than 60,000 volunteer hours to their community. Home | Who We Are | Did You Know | Xmas Home Tour | Links
