Fascinating Facts and Interesting Information about the IODEDID YOU KNOW...that $3,500 was made available to provide relief to victims of Spring floods in New Brunswick in 2008. DID YOU KNOW...in 2007 The National Chapter of Canada IODE donated $5,000 to the Canadian War Museum to be used in the preparation of a plaque to recognize the work done by IODE throughout the past century, especially the ongoing legacy of the War Memorial Scholarships. IODE will be recognized on the Donor Wall under the Subscriber level. DID YOU KNOW...that the National Chapter of Canada IODE donated $6,000 to the Paynter Home Orphanage in Sri Lanka to assist victims of the December 2004 Tsunami. DID YOU KNOW...following Hurricane Juan in 2003, IODE Canada allocated $2,500 to assist fishermen with the purchase of lobster traps. DID YOU KNOW...that the National Chapter of Canada IODE contributed $2,000 to the Canadian Red Cross - USA Appeal for victims of the events on September 11, 2001. DID YOU KNOW...that members raised over $24,500 towards the Ontario and Quebec Ice Storm Relief Fund in 1998. DID YOU KNOW...that members raised over $14,000 towards the Manitoba flood of 1997. DID YOU KNOW...that the Provincial Chapter IODE has donated $317,600 since 1973 for the continuing support of: Medical Genetics through the Resource Centre, London; the Directory of Genetic Support Groups and Gene Scene and genetic counselling clinics. DID YOU KNOW...that members raised $12,000,000 in the Two World Wars to purchase hospitals, hospital ships, ambulances, bomber and fighter aircraft. Relief to prisoners of war and refugee camps, libraries and canteens for servicemen and thousands of volunteer hours were among the many contributions in both wars. DID YOU KNOW...that as a special project during World War II, the National Chapter IODE collected funds raised by provincial and primary chapters to purchase a Bolingbroke Bomber that was presented to the Canadian Government in 1940. IN ONE WEEK $100,000 was raised. As a matter of interest, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is currently restoring a "Boly" which will bear the IODE crest on its nosecone. From the Canadian Warplane Heritage website - The IODE, an active supporter of the Boly restoration, raised sufficient funds during the war to buy a Bolingbroke for the war effort. Known as "Ida" it was flown by Hamilton Squadron. DID YOU KNOW...that in 1939, IODE was the first Canadian organization to send civilian relief to Britain and continued with the adoption of two children's hospitals there. DID YOU KNOW...that a unique wartime (WWII) gift was the shipment of 87 bridal gowns which were worn by hundreds of British service women. DID YOU KNOW...that following World War II and the Korean War, massive quantities of clothes, medical supplies and food were sent for relief of displaced persons. $100,000, raised across Canada by exhibiting a needlepoint carpet made by Queen Mary, was used to provide much needed dollars for Britain. The carpet was presented to the people of Canada and is housed in the National Gallery of Canada. DID YOU KNOW...that to honour Canadians who gave their lives or suffered permanent disabilities in the World Wars, two War Memorial Funds were established and chapters subscribed over $1,000,000. These living memorials continue to provide University bursaries and scholarships. DID YOU KNOW...that The International Peace Garden, located on the border of Manitoba and North Dakota, dedicated to peace and friendship between Canada and the United States, is continuously supported by IODE. DID YOU KNOW...that one-half million dollars was raised to assist victims of the Manitoba floods in 1950 with food, bedding and home furnishings. DID YOU KNOW...that 1000 members, who trained in civil defence, brought immediate aid to victims of Hurricane Hazel in Ontario in 1954. Ontario chapters raised $12,981.50 for Hurricane Relief. DID YOU KNOW...that Nova Scotia members prepared hot meals and served thousands of rescue workers at the Springhill Minehead for 24 hour periods during the two week emergency in 1965. DID YOU KNOW...that IODE actively promotes Citizenship through assisting at Citizenship Courts, programs in the local schools, assistance at the Family Court and participation in Remembrance Day ceremonies. DID YOU KNOW...that IODE has assisted in Northern communities in Northern Ontario, the Northwest Territories and Labrador with such projects as: Snack Pack, Labra-Book, Toys for the North, Footwear for the North, the Labrador Industrial Arts Program, and the Labrador Substance Abuse Programme.
