This is a reminder that the Walpole Island prairie and savannah outing for Sunday, August 10, is limited to 18 participants. We have invited Sydenham Field Naturalists to join us. 96 species of vascular plants that are rare in Ontario, and 8 species not known anywhere else in Canada, can be found on Walpole. Of course we won't see all of these but the numbers indicate the quality of the Island's flora.

This is a reminder of LWI's committment to provide two grade 12 environment scholarships this year in view of the double cohort graduating this spring. The scholarships will be presented this coming fall so there is still time to make a donation to the LWI scholarship fund and support our Lambton County students. Each one is for $500 and can make a big difference to a worthy student going on to college or university in an environmentally related course. Please consider making a donation to this fund to assist LWI in meeting its committment.

Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey enclosed with the summer issue of EARTHWAYS. It is important to express your opinion on what you would like to see happen with the Sarnia Waterfront. City Council should be encouraged to leave the waterfront as open public space rather than having it filled up with buildings such as aquariums or museums. These types of structures could be located away from the waterfront.

The surveys should be turned in to the planning department at City hall or if you want to drop them off in my mailbox (at 1455 Lakeshore Rd) I will take them in to City Hall.

The trail in the Port Franks Forested Dunes Nature Reserve from beginning to end, and back again, is a long haul for some of us. We are considering installing some benches at appropriate locations. Members might consider financing such benches as a memorial to loved ones. For $100 we think we can buy and permanently install a bench with an engraved plaque with wording to be provided by the donor.
