The large (up to 1 1/2 inches long) black and yellow garden spider should be considered as a gardener's helper or an outdoor pet. It can be seen sitting, head down, in the centre of its large orb web, waiting for insects to become entangled. When it feels the web vibrating, it rushes over and wraps its catch with sticky silk and injects it with venom before devouring it for lunch.
