From childhood, growing up on a farm in Andrew, Alberta, surrounded by Jackpines, fields of grain crops, wild roses, horses, cattle, turkeys, coyotes, and prairie dogs, etc., Shirely McFarlane had a close link with nature. These all motivated her to take an interest in the fine arts. She enjoys painting landscapes, trees, birds, animals, in watercolours, acrylics, and oils. Several of Shirley's series were also inspired by her travels to Greece, Italy, France, and Arizona.
