REAL ESTATE

F
ew lawyers will refuse to accept work in the area of purchasing, selling or mortgaging of real estate. However, the public is given very limited assistance in selecting a lawyer in this property field. Let me make some suggestions to assist you in the selection process of choosing a lawyer. That selection process should be as follows:

(a) Ask your friends, not just what they paid, which is an important factor, but did they see the lawyer they chose or did they only see or have contact with a secretary.
(b)
Did the lawyer your friends chose answer telephone calls?
(c) Did the lawyer your friends chose take the time to explain the closing documents in detail and in a fashion which they could understand?
(d) If a problem arose when your friends purchased, when were they first informed of the problem? Was it only at the time of signing closing documents or even later when their furniture was on the truck?
(e) Did the lawyer explain the practical and legal significance of title problems encountered. Did title problems impede closing when a property purchased was later sold?

If you have questions, call me or your lawyer before you sign an Offer.

The out-of-pocket expenses (disbursements) on a purchase of real estate can be significant. For an interactive page outlining the out-of-pocket expenses:
